The Nose Knows: 6 Things Your Nose Tells You About Your Health

Your nose does more than help you smell and breathe—it can sometimes provide clues about your health. Doctors often examine the inside of the nose during checkups, paying attention to the color and condition of the nasal tissues. Pale, bluish, swollen, or unusually red tissue can sometimes be associated with allergies, inflammation, or infection, although these signs alone cannot determine a diagnosis.

Research has also explored connections between the bacteria found in the nose and factors such as body composition, as well as the relationship between facial features and perceived attractiveness. Other studies have investigated whether nasal tissue could provide clues related to conditions such as schizophrenia, while changes in the sense of smell have been observed in some people before symptoms of certain neurological conditions become apparent.

The appearance of the outer nose can also change for many reasons. Persistent redness may be associated with conditions such as rosacea, allergies, stress, or other health factors, rather than pointing to one specific cause. Likewise, changes in nasal mucus can sometimes occur during infections, while nosebleeds have many possible explanations and are often harmless.

Overall, the nose can offer interesting clues about what is happening in the body, but individual signs should not be treated as a diagnosis. Changes in nasal appearance, breathing, smell, or persistent symptoms are best considered alongside other symptoms and, when necessary, discussed with a healthcare professional.
