Vanessa called her sister early one morning claiming their father had died during the night, but he was actually sitting nearby, very much alive and enjoying breakfast. Vanessa and her husband, Grant, had already begun discussing his house, truck, bank accounts, and funeral arrangements. When their father took the phone and spoke to Vanessa himself, her story quickly fell apart.
The situation became more concerning when their father learned that someone had contacted a funeral home about his arrangements, while Vanessa had also asked about accessing his estate. He later returned home to find Vanessa, Grant, a locksmith, and someone preparing to evaluate his truck, so he contacted the police. It emerged that Grant was facing financial problems and that the couple had found an outdated will, leading them to believe they would eventually inherit the property.
The father changed his estate arrangements, removing Vanessa and Grant from financial and emergency authorizations and placing Vanessa’s inheritance in a trust they could not control. Months later, Vanessa apologized, and although their relationship remained cautious, they slowly began speaking again. The father continued visiting his other daughter, stealing her bacon and complaining about her coffee, while one morning another call from Vanessa ended with a simple reminder: he was still very much alive.
