Brad had always worn thin gloves, even during summer, to cover the tattoos on his arms. Although our children loved tracing them at home, he simply explained that he had gotten them when he was young and regretted them. I accepted his explanation, though I always felt there was more to the story.

One day, after our daughter Molly fell into a muddy puddle at the park, Brad took off his shirt and wrapped it around her, leaving his tattooed arms fully visible. At a nearby store, a woman named Erin suddenly recognized him by a crooked sunflower tattoo on his forearm. Brad initially denied knowing her, but Erin was certain she had found the right person.

Erin explained that she had once been learning tattoo artistry while recovering from an illness that affected her hands. Brad had volunteered to let her practice under professional supervision, helping her regain confidence. The sunflower was the first tattoo she had completed, and although she believed it was imperfect, Brad had encouraged her and told her it looked perfect. He had also supported other recovering artists and apprentices, with each tattoo representing someone’s courage and progress.

There was, however, one tattoo Brad truly associated with regret: an unfinished circle on his shoulder that represented his abandoned dream of becoming an illustrator. That changed when Molly asked him to draw a horse. Instead of throwing away the imperfect picture, Brad proudly put it on the refrigerator, where Molly added purple wings. Inspired by that small moment, he enrolled in an art class the next morning, finally deciding to stop hiding unfinished parts of himself and begin writing a new chapter of his life.
