Older homes often come with their share of challenges, from chilly drafts and creaky floors to unwanted insects. When spiders begin appearing in multiple rooms, homeowners may look for ways to keep them away. While popular options such as peppermint oil and tea tree oil sprays are often used as natural deterrents, some people have turned to an unexpected household product: Vicks VapoRub. Its strong scent, produced by ingredients such as menthol, eucalyptus oil, and camphor, has led to claims that it may discourage spiders from settling in certain areas.

Those who try this approach sometimes place small amounts of the ointment on cotton balls near windows, doorways, and corners where spiders frequently appear. However, scientific evidence supporting Vicks VapoRub as a spider repellent is limited, and reported results are largely anecdotal. Other commonly used approaches include peppermint sprays, vinegar solutions, cedar products, and citrus peels, although their effectiveness can vary. These methods should not be considered guaranteed solutions for keeping spiders away.

For more consistent results, prevention and home maintenance are important. Sealing cracks around windows and doors, reducing clutter, and keeping outdoor areas tidy can help limit the places spiders use to enter or hide. Although most spiders are harmless and help control other pests, it’s understandable that many people prefer to keep them out of their living spaces. Ultimately, combining sensible preventive measures with carefully chosen deterrents may help reduce spider sightings, but no single household remedy guarantees a spider-free home.
