What Can You Do With Eggshells? Their Hidden Uses Might Surprise You

Many people throw eggshells away without realizing they can be reused in practical and creative ways. Made primarily of calcium carbonate, eggshells can be useful in gardening, composting, household projects, and crafts. Before reusing them, simply rinse away any residue, let them dry thoroughly, and crush them as needed. This small habit can help reduce kitchen waste while giving everyday leftovers a second purpose.

In the garden, crushed eggshells can be added to compost or soil, gradually contributing calcium as they break down. However, they release nutrients slowly and are not a quick fertilizer, so testing your soil can help determine what your plants actually need. Clean eggshells can also serve as small seed-starting containers, provided you create a drainage hole and crush the shell when transplanting to help roots grow. Around the home, finely crushed shells mixed with water and dish soap may help remove residue from sturdy containers, but avoid using them on delicate or easily scratched surfaces. Dried eggshell pieces can also add texture to mosaics, decorative frames, collages, and children’s crafts.

Although some gardeners use eggshells in worm composting, they are not a reliable solution for keeping slugs and other pests away. Eating homemade eggshell powder also requires caution, as improper preparation may leave harmful bacteria behind, and excessive calcium intake can cause health problems. Anyone considering eggshell-derived calcium as a supplement should consult a healthcare professional first. Avoid putting large quantities of shells down a garbage disposal, as they may contribute to plumbing issues. Ultimately, eggshells are not miracle fertilizers or remedies, but with proper preparation, they can become a useful resource for composting, gardening, crafts, and selected household tasks instead of going straight into the trash.
