Mum’s ‘pimple’ led to terrifying ordeal

Rebecca Cook, 46, thought a small white spot on her ear was simply a pimple. After a friend encouraged her to have it checked, her doctor identified it as basal cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer. She was referred to a plastic surgeon, who removed the affected tissue and used a skin graft from behind her ear to repair the area. Recovery took about a month, and the scar eventually became difficult to notice.

Further testing showed that the cancer was an infiltrative form of basal cell carcinoma, requiring regular checks every three months for a year because additional treatment could potentially have been needed. Cook was recently given the all-clear after a separate spot on her nose was biopsied and found to be clear. The experience has made her much more careful about sun protection and regular skin checks.

Cook, who has always taken sun safety seriously while raising her two children, now wants others to take skin health seriously throughout the entire year. She is also calling for greater access to affordable skin-check services. Dermatologist Dr. Ludi Ge emphasized that UV exposure can still damage skin during cooler months and while driving, even when the weather does not feel hot.

The story highlights why changes on the skin should not automatically be dismissed as harmless. Signs worth having checked can include a spot or scab that does not heal, easy bleeding, changes in size or colour, or a previously flat mole becoming raised or developing an irregular edge. Regular skin checks and consistent sun protection can help people identify potential problems earlier.
