Alison, 37, lost her husband Mike to cancer a year earlier, leaving her to raise their four-year-old daughter, Mia. Since the loss, Mia had often spoken about her father, while Mike’s longtime friend and Alison’s boss, Harold, had provided significant support with groceries, repairs, and time spent caring for Mia. Although Alison appreciated his help, a coworker warned her that Harold might be becoming too involved in their lives.
At a pool party, Mia suddenly ran to Harold and became quiet while looking closely at him. She then told Alison, “Mommy, Daddy’s there,” leaving Harold visibly shaken. Later, Alison overheard a conversation about renovations to Harold’s home and began wondering about his plans. She also noticed a small compass-rose tattoo behind his ear, in exactly the same place where Mike had a matching tattoo.
When Alison confronted Harold, he explained that he had gotten the tattoo six months earlier because Mike had once asked him to get one with him. After Mike’s death, Harold wanted to fulfill that promise. He also admitted that his feelings had changed over time and that he had begun imagining a future with Alison and Mia, including a home and family life together. Alison realized that remaining dependent on Harold would make the situation more complicated, particularly because he was also her employer.
She ultimately left the firm with a fair severance and a strong reference. That evening, Alison sat with Mia on the porch, where her daughter quietly acknowledged that she knew her father was not really there but that she still missed him. Alison comforted her and shared that she missed him too. After a difficult year, the moment gave Alison a renewed sense that, together, she and Mia could begin moving forward.
