The first signs made me fear that something was wrong at the company. My name appeared on a folder in accounting, conversations stopped when I entered rooms, and Richard began having frequent private calls with his lawyer. When he asked me to meet him alone downstairs at four, I became convinced that I was about to lose the job I had spent years helping build.
For an entire week, anxiety followed me everywhere. The unexplained meetings, secretive conversations, and even a strange meeting at the park made me imagine the worst. I barely slept and worried about how I would tell my mother that everything I had worked for might be coming to an end.
When Friday finally arrived, I went to the park expecting difficult news. Instead, Richard revealed that he was selling the company and stepping down. The new owners had given him the choice of bringing someone he trusted to replace him or allowing them to select someone themselves.
Then came the surprise I never expected: Richard had chosen me. All the folders, lawyer calls, and private conversations had not been about removing me from the company—they had been part of preparing me for a much bigger opportunity. What I had feared as the end of my future turned out to be the beginning of a new chapter.
