A woman agrees to marry Jonah, the imprisoned son of wealthy Celeste, because her struggling family needs financial support and her brother Owen desperately needs help. Celeste promises monthly payments, making the arrangement seem practical, while Jonah insists that although he committed a minor theft, he was wrongly blamed for a larger crime allegedly arranged by his cousin Dean. Over the next three years, Jonah’s letters reveal his caring nature, and the two gradually develop a genuine bond while investigating his conviction.
Their investigation uncovers evidence that contradicts the original timeline, and with help from a legal aid attorney, Jonah’s conviction is overturned and he is released. Soon afterward, Jonah gives her a black box containing Celeste’s notebook and hidden documents. She discovers that Celeste deliberately chose her because she believed financial desperation would make her easy to control. The documents also reveal that Jonah’s late father created a trust giving her significant authority over the family foundation if Jonah was proven innocent while still married to her.
Although relieved by the truth, she feels betrayed after learning that Jonah knew about the trust before his release and had kept it from her. She refuses Celeste’s offer of money in exchange for giving up her rights and later exposes Celeste and Dean at a major foundation event using the evidence she discovered. Investigations follow, Dean faces charges, and Celeste loses her leadership position. Jonah apologizes and repays what he legitimately owed, but she makes it clear that rebuilding trust will require consistent actions. Their first marriage began as a desperate arrangement, while any future together would have to be based on honesty, equality, and genuine choice.
