At 6:12 a.m., a pregnant woman was awakened by sirens and learned that her elderly neighbor, Ruth Higgins, had died. When the sheriff directed her to the mailbox, she discovered a yellow envelope containing cash and a letter from Ruth explaining that she had wanted to help after seeing the woman struggle financially following her boyfriend’s departure.

The gift came after the woman had recently helped Ruth, an 82-year-old widow, with her overgrown lawn. A doorbell camera ultimately provided additional evidence, showing Ruth placing the envelope in the mailbox herself before her death. The accusations were dropped, and the money legally went to the woman, who used it for her mortgage, necessities, and her daughter’s savings. Her daughter was born prematurely around the time of Ruth’s funeral and was named Ruth Odessa in her honor.
