A large python with an unusually swollen belly was discovered beneath a family’s shed, leaving everyone wondering what the snake had recently eaten. Because of its size and unusual appearance, wildlife experts were called to safely examine the animal and determine the cause of the swelling.

After the python was secured, specialists used imaging technology to examine its abdomen. The X-ray revealed the outline of its most recent meal, offering a fascinating look at how large snakes feed. Pythons are able to swallow prey whole because of their flexible jaws and expandable bodies, with digestion taking place gradually afterward.

The discovery also reminded the family of the importance of keeping a safe distance from wild snakes, even when they appear inactive after feeding. Experts recommend contacting trained wildlife professionals rather than attempting to handle them. Beyond the surprise of finding such a large reptile nearby, the encounter highlighted the important role snakes play in ecosystems by helping control populations of rodents and other animals.
