Eventually, I found Sylvia, and she revealed a truth that completely changed the story I had believed for decades. She explained that she had been pregnant when I left for a new job, but my mother had pressured her to end our relationship and kept us apart. Sylvia later gave birth to a daughter and tried to contact me, but the child was eventually placed for adoption.

After Doreen’s death, I discovered letters and adoption records among my mother’s belongings. The child’s birth date matched Taryn’s, revealing that the daughter Doreen and I had raised for 37 years was actually my biological daughter. When I told Taryn, she was overwhelmed and asked whether Doreen had truly loved her. I assured her that whatever mistakes Doreen had made, I had witnessed her love for Taryn throughout her life.

Eventually, Taryn met Sylvia, creating an emotional reunion between mother and daughter after decades apart. Sylvia was moved to finally meet the child she had lost, while Taryn responded with warmth and even joked about inheriting her green eyes. I still cherish the years I shared with Doreen, but the truth brought painful questions about forgiveness. Now, when Taryn shares photos of her grandchildren with Sylvia, I think about Doreen’s final words asking me to forgive her—and understand them in a way I never could before.
