Mike’s strange backyard discovery initially looked like it could be an old underground bomb shelter. Instead, beneath fallen leaves was a heavy, rusted metal hatch marked “Somerville, Mass.” Research revealed that it was part of a forgotten mid-century household waste system once used in parts of New England.

Before curbside garbage collection became common, some communities installed underground metal waste bins set inside concrete wells. Homeowners could place their household trash into the bins, while collection workers would lift the containers, empty them into trucks, and return them underground. The system helped contain odors, keep pests away, and make waste disposal more manageable.

Over time, these underground bins became obsolete as modern curbside collection took over, particularly by the 1970s. Many were abandoned, filled in, or covered over, making discoveries like this increasingly rare. Today, some homeowners even repurpose the old structures as planters, coolers, or decorative features—turning a forgotten piece of local infrastructure into a reminder of how everyday life once worked.
