When you receive a formal invitation, you may notice an RSVP line beginning with the letter “M.” This traditional format can look confusing, but the “M” simply serves as the beginning of a courtesy title. Guests can complete it with a title such as “Mr.,” “Mrs.,” “Ms.,” or “Miss,” followed by their name.

The tradition comes from older invitation etiquette, when formal titles were commonly used when addressing guests. Today, many invitations use simpler wording such as “Name” or “Guest Name,” but the traditional “M” format is still sometimes used.

If you encounter one, simply enter the title you prefer and your name, or provide your name if the format allows. The important thing is to follow the host’s instructions and clearly indicate who is responding.

When completing the RSVP, remember to confirm your attendance and provide any requested information, such as invited guests, meal selections, or dietary preferences. In short, the “M” is simply a traditional starting point for a courtesy title, intended to make your response clear and respectful.
