Despite this, the narrator’s mother had remained by her side for years, caring for her faithfully without seeking recognition for her sacrifices.

Weeks later, Lila suddenly called in a panic and offered to buy the shawl for any amount of money. The reason was revealed through the family lawyer: the grandmother had secretly left behind a substantial fortune, with a legal condition stating that whoever owned the shawl would inherit the hidden estate. The mother had known about the arrangement and deliberately made sure the shawl went to the narrator.
