### A Garden, a Loss, and a Lesson About Kindness

After Daniel’s funeral, Claire and her children returned home to discover their neighbor Monica taking apples and pears from the family’s trees. Claire asked her to stop, but Monica explained that she needed the money and believed the fruit would otherwise go to waste. The next morning, Claire found that Monica had returned during the night and taken the remaining fruit, even using Daniel’s own ladder. To Claire, it felt like more than the loss of a harvest—it felt like someone had taken part of what Daniel had created for his children.

Rather than responding with anger, Claire decided to document what had happened. With help from family and friends, she created a public display featuring photographs of the trees, Daniel, the missing harvest, and a timeline of the events. Seeing everything laid out made Monica realize that her actions had been noticed and had affected the family and community.

Monica eventually admitted what she had done, apologized to the neighbors, and agreed to repay what she could. Claire could have responded only with anger, but instead chose to give Monica an opportunity to take responsibility and make amends. Her response reflected a lesson Daniel had believed in: people should have the chance to recognize their mistakes and do better.

Later, Ben discovered his father’s old garden journal, filled with notes about the trees and memories of learning how to care for them. He realized that Daniel had left behind far more than a collection of fruit trees—he had passed on knowledge, patience, kindness, and a tradition that could continue growing. The family’s greatest inheritance was not the apples or pears, but the values Daniel had planted alongside them.
