I never imagined that a phone call after two in the morning would end with me holding a newborn baby in a hospital hallway and questioning everything I believed about my life. My husband, Michael, had rushed to the hospital claiming that a coworker’s daughter was in trouble. When I arrived, he placed a newborn girl named Lucy in my arms and explained that the hospital needed an emergency foster home. Months earlier, we had applied to become foster parents, so I thought we were simply beginning an unexpected new chapter. Then a doctor asked Michael whether he had ever donated genetic material or preserved embryos, and everything changed.

The hospital soon revealed that Lucy’s mother, Anna, had died giving birth to her. Anna’s mother, Eleanor, arrived in tears and demanded to see her granddaughter. When she saw Michael, I realized he knew more than he had told me. Then the doctor showed me a preliminary DNA report suggesting a connection between Lucy and me. Twenty-two years earlier, I had been told that my baby girl had died after a devastating medical emergency during childbirth. I had mourned that child for decades. The truth was far more complicated: Anna was my biological daughter, and the story I had been given about her death had been false.

Years later, Anna discovered the truth about her identity and eventually found Michael. She had been pregnant with Lucy and wanted to reconnect with me, but fear and circumstances kept delaying that reunion. Tragically, she died before she could meet me. Before her death, however, she made one final request: she wanted Lucy brought to me. After the hospital corrected the DNA report and confirmed that I was Lucy’s grandmother, I finally had the chance to say goodbye to the daughter I never knew I had.

At sunrise, Lucy came home with us. I wrapped her in the pink blanket I had saved after believing my baby had died so many years earlier. As I held her, I understood what Anna had wanted me to know: Lucy was never unwanted, and neither was the daughter I had lost. After twenty-two years of believing my child was gone forever, I was suddenly holding her daughter in my arms. Anna could not come home herself, but she had found a way to bring Lucy home—and, in doing so, she gave me a second chance to love the family I had lost.
