When Gordon and his wife, Ardis, were spending the winter in Mesa, Arizona, a neighbor called with surprising news: someone was living in their basement back in Iowa. The couple drove nearly 1,400 miles home to discover that their son, Brett, had moved his girlfriend, Jade, and her younger brother, Austin, into the house and was collecting $600 a month in rent. Austin had paid in good faith, believing Brett owned the property, and Gordon was upset by the situation. Still, he refused to leave Austin out in the freezing cold when he learned the young man had nowhere else to go.

As the family talked, Gordon discovered that Brett had lost his factory job shortly before Christmas and had been struggling financially for months. Between truck payments, child support, and the pressure to provide for himself, Brett had taken delivery work and hoped the basement rental would help him recover before his parents returned in May. When Gordon asked why he hadn’t reached out for help, Brett admitted he was afraid to disappoint his father, who had spent decades working steadily. But Brett then reminded Gordon of something he had long kept secret: years earlier, Gordon himself had gone six weeks without pay and borrowed $400 from his own father to keep the family mortgage current.

That realization changed the conversation. Gordon understood that by hiding his own struggles for so many years, he had unintentionally taught his son that financial hardship was something to be ashamed of. The family agreed that Brett would return Austin’s rent money and that they would find a fair arrangement for everyone moving forward. That evening, Ardis made coffee, and the four of them sat together around the kitchen table, beginning an honest conversation that had been missing for too long. Gordon realized that being a good father isn’t about appearing strong or never making mistakes—it’s about making sure your children know they can turn to you when life gets difficult.
