A note on Archie’s refrigerator read, “Coffee is not breakfast.” It was written by Skyla, his 24-year-old girlfriend, who had been missing for five days. Archie was a successful businessman, while Skyla worked evenings at a restaurant and insisted on supporting herself despite his offers of financial help. Influenced by the suspicions of family and friends who questioned her intentions, Archie made a terrible decision: he pretended to have a serious illness requiring expensive treatment to see whether she would stay with him if he lost everything.

Instead of walking away, Skyla immediately searched for assistance programs, contacted people, and explored every possible way to help him. Then she asked for five days away and stopped answering his calls. Archie began to believe his loved ones had been right, but he couldn’t stop thinking about the small, thoughtful ways Skyla had cared for him. When she finally returned, she carried her grandmother’s old wooden recipe box, filled with handwritten notes, contact numbers, and information about medical assistance. She had traveled to meet her grandmother’s friend to find possible solutions. Through tears, she explained that although she couldn’t find the money, she wanted to make sure Archie wouldn’t face his supposed illness alone.

Overwhelmed by her devotion, Archie confessed that he had never been sick and had invented the story because he doubted her intentions. Skyla was heartbroken, telling him he could have simply asked her what he wanted to know before leaving. Weeks later, they met for coffee, where Archie sincerely apologized and admitted that fear had led him to hurt someone he loved. Skyla agreed to give their relationship another chance, though rebuilding trust took time. Months later, while they were cooking together, she gave him a new recipe card reminding him to remain himself even when he was afraid. Archie finally learned that love cannot be measured through painful tests; it grows through honesty, trust, and the courage to be vulnerable with one another.
