Abigail had not spoken to her mother, Martha, for eleven years when she received an urgent call from St. Jude Hospital. Her mother had suffered a severe stroke, and when Abigail arrived, Martha could barely speak. Before passing away, she grabbed Abigail’s coat and made one final request: “Promise me you won’t abandon Gabriel.” The name stunned Abigail. Gabriel Vance had disappeared twenty years earlier, and no one had ever explained what happened to him.

After her mother’s death, Abigail collected her belongings and discovered something unusual among a few dollars, a silver ring, and two brass keys: an old municipal citation from 2012. The document accused Martha of leaving wooden crates filled with canned groceries near the fence of the Oakridge municipal dump. It listed six separate dates, each associated with the same $42.50 fine. Abigail couldn’t understand why her mother, who had always insisted on staying out of other people’s business, would repeatedly leave food near a dump. But the discovery brought back memories of Gabriel, whose disappearance had sparked rumors that he had run away. Her mother had refused to discuss him for years.

Remembering Martha’s final plea, Abigail folded the citation and placed it in her pocket. The repeated dates and payments suggested that her mother had been keeping a secret for a long time, and the mysterious food deliveries might hold the key to understanding it. Abigail had promised not to abandon Gabriel without knowing what that promise truly meant. Now, determined to uncover the truth behind her mother’s actions and the boy who vanished two decades earlier, she set out to find Gabriel and discover what Martha had been hiding all these years.
