Kevin Dorsey had managed Bright Shine Car Wash outside Dayton, Ohio, for fifteen years when he noticed something unusual about a regular customer named Albert. Every Friday at exactly 7:15 a.m., Albert arrived in his spotless Buick, paid for a wash, and parked beside the air pump for five minutes before leaving. When Kevin finally asked why he kept washing an already clean car, Albert glanced at the empty passenger seat and quietly explained that he was afraid someone would notice the person who used to sit there was gone. Soon afterward, Albert returned with a woman beside him, but a memorial card bearing his late wife Irene’s photograph left Kevin with more questions than answers.

Albert eventually revealed that Irene had been his wife for fifty-seven years, and her identical twin sister, Ida, lived in a memory care facility across the road with Alzheimer’s disease. As a child, Ida had loved watching her father wash the family Buick every Friday, and even as her memories faded, that familiar ritual remained meaningful to her. After Irene passed away, Albert continued the tradition to bring comfort to Ida, who sometimes forgot her sister was gone and sometimes remembered but chose not to remind him of his loss. When Albert suffered a heart attack, he asked Kevin to wash the Buick twice, just as he always had. Kevin honored his request, and Ida waved from her window.

The experience changed Kevin’s understanding of love and family. He began visiting his own father, who also had Alzheimer’s and no longer recognized him. He realized that love doesn’t always depend on being remembered; sometimes, it simply means being there. Today, Albert still visits every Friday, and together they wash the Buick twice, share coffee, and wave to Kevin’s father across the road. Even though his father no longer knows who Kevin is, he waves back. Their quiet ritual serves as a reminder that love can endure even when memories fade, and sometimes the most meaningful thing we can do is keep showing up for the people who matter to us.
