After thirteen years of marriage and two daughters, Max left his wife for Claire, his personal trainer, telling her that she no longer looked the way he wanted. When he later invited her to his wedding and pointed out that her invitation included a +1, she decided to attend for the sake of their daughters and asked her coworker and close friend Edward to pretend to be her boyfriend.

Max was visibly surprised to see them together, but instead of reacting kindly, he mocked the idea that anyone would want to date her. Edward remained calm and gave Max a wedding gift: a pair of oversized trousers from a time when he had struggled with his own body image. He explained that the woman beside him had once helped him understand that he did not need to change himself to deserve happiness.

Edward later admitted that he had agreed to the arrangement partly because he hoped she would realize she had nothing to prove to Max. When her daughter overheard Max’s hurtful comment and asked why she had pretended Edward was her boyfriend, she finally explained that she wanted her father to believe someone wanted her. Her daughter’s simple response—that they already wanted her there—meant far more.

As she left the wedding with her daughters, Max asked what would happen between her and Edward, still framing her worth around whether another man wanted her. She chose not to answer and walked away. Looking at her reflection in the car window, she realized she no longer cared about judging herself through Max’s eyes, and she left with a renewed sense of self-worth and the love of her daughters.
