The 1943 Bronze Lincoln Cent is one of the most famous error coins in American numismatic history, created during the challenges of World War II. That year, the U.S. Mint switched from bronze to zinc-coated steel cents to conserve copper for the war effort. A small number of leftover bronze planchets from 1942 were apparently struck with 1943 dies, producing coins that were never supposed to exist.

When examples began attracting attention in the late 1940s, collectors were fascinated by how such an unusual error could occur during a period of strict wartime production. News of the coins spread through newspapers and collecting communities, fueling interest in their rarity and speculation about whether additional examples might still be found.

The coins stand out visually because Lincoln’s familiar portrait appears on a warm bronze-colored surface rather than the gray appearance of the 1943 steel cent. Their appeal comes from the combination of historical context, rarity, and the circumstances surrounding their accidental creation during a time when copper was an important wartime resource.

More than eight decades later, authentic 1943 Bronze Lincoln Cents remain highly prized by collectors, with only a small number known. Their extraordinary scarcity and historical significance have made them some of the most celebrated error coins in American collecting, showing how an unexpected minting mistake can become an important piece of history.
