I had lived peacefully in my home for nearly five years until Claire moved in across the street. Soon after, she began complaining about my trash cans, my grandmother’s wind chimes, and even my fence. I tried to ignore it, but one day I came home to find an official city notice saying Claire had reported my fence for allegedly violating height regulations.

I gathered my property records, permits, and survey documents, all of which showed that the fence had been there legally for years. When city inspector Greg arrived, he carefully measured the fence and checked the records before confirming that everything was compliant. Claire had been watching the inspection, expecting a different outcome, but the situation quickly took an unexpected turn.

While reviewing the property boundary, Greg noticed that some of Claire’s landscaping appeared to extend beyond her legal property line. He examined the survey markers and measured her flower beds, stone border, and irrigation system. His findings showed that nearly three feet of her landscaping crossed the boundary, including part of a city easement and a section of my property. Claire would have to remove or relocate the affected landscaping.

Claire assumed I would be pleased, but I told her I never wanted an enemy—I wanted a neighbor. Weeks later, she came to apologize and admitted that she had spent so much time looking for problems at my home that she had failed to check her own property. We never became close friends, but the tension disappeared, and she stopped complaining about the wind chimes. Sometimes, focusing too much on other people’s faults can lead us to overlook our own.
