Fresh berries are popular for their taste and health benefits, but a viral trend has made some people look twice at their fruit. When strawberries, raspberries, or blackberries are soaked in salt water, tiny white larvae can sometimes emerge. Although the sight may be surprising, it can happen because berries grow outdoors and are naturally exposed to insects.

Some small fruit flies lay eggs inside soft fruit as it ripens, and the resulting larvae can be difficult to notice. Soaking the berries in salt water can encourage any hidden larvae to leave the fruit, making them suddenly visible. While this may be unpleasant to discover, the presence of tiny insects or larvae can occur naturally in fresh produce.

For most healthy people, accidentally consuming small amounts of these organisms is generally not considered harmful. Berries that are fresh, free of mold, and not spoiled are typically still edible after being washed properly. Rinsing them under running water can help remove dirt and unwanted material, while some people also use salt water or diluted vinegar solutions. Ultimately, whether to eat or discard the berries is a matter of personal comfort, but seeing tiny larvae does not automatically mean the fruit is unsafe.
