Those metal collars wrapped around tree trunks may look unusual, but they have a practical purpose. Known as tree baffles, they are designed to prevent climbing animals such as squirrels and raccoons from reaching branches and nearby buildings. By creating a smooth surface that is difficult to grip, the baffles make it harder for animals to climb upward.

This can help prevent wildlife from using tree branches as pathways to roofs, attics, chimneys, bird feeders, and other areas around a home. Squirrels may otherwise build nests in trees, while raccoons and other animals can use branches to reach places where they are not wanted. Baffles come in different designs, including wide metal bands for mature trees and cone-shaped versions for smaller trees.

Proper installation is important because the barrier must work effectively without harming the tree. As the trunk grows, the baffle may need to be adjusted or replaced so it does not become too tight. So, if you spot a shiny metal collar around a tree, it probably isn’t there to repair or support the trunk—it is most likely a simple wildlife barrier designed to keep climbing animals from reaching the top.
