At 82, Margaret’s routine doctor’s visit brought back memories of her 56-year marriage to Robert. For 54 years, Robert had followed one unusual nightly habit: before bed, he asked Margaret to remove her shoes and socks so he could carefully examine her feet. What seemed like a simple routine had a very important reason behind it.

When Margaret was 28, she survived a serious car accident that caused permanent nerve damage and reduced sensation in parts of her feet. She sometimes could not feel injuries, heat, or pain, once stepping on broken glass and another time burning her foot without realizing it. Her doctor warned Robert that injuries Margaret couldn’t feel could become serious if they went unnoticed, so he began checking her feet every evening for cuts, swelling, burns, blisters, or other changes.

Years later, during an examination after a minor fall, the doctor noticed that Margaret still had areas of reduced sensation. He also discovered a small injury between her toes that she had not felt. When Robert saw it, he immediately became concerned and insisted on checking the area carefully, prompting Margaret and the doctor to laugh. The moment reminded Margaret how seriously Robert had always taken her safety.

Looking at her husband’s aging hands, Margaret realized that his nightly routine had been his quiet way of expressing love. Robert had never been particularly comfortable saying “I love you,” but for decades he had shown it through a simple ritual, careful attention, and the same gentle request: “Show me your feet.” What once felt like an inconvenience had actually been his way of making sure the woman he loved was safe.
