Sixteen-year-old Lily spent three nights sewing a beautiful green dress for Annie, a quiet classmate whose family could not afford one for a school concert. She also gave Annie the blue cardigan her late father had given her, a deeply personal gift she had even worn to his funeral. The next morning, Annie’s mother arrived with Annie wearing the cardigan and handed Lily’s mother a flash drive containing a video of Lily and other girls bullying Annie at school.

Heartbroken, Lily’s mother discovered that her daughter had left home and was at the train station. When they found her, Lily admitted she had been cruel to Annie but explained that the two had once been close friends. After Annie revealed that she liked her, Lily became afraid of being rejected by the other girls and joined in the bullying, eventually becoming trapped in behavior she regretted. She had recently learned that Annie and her mother had been present when Lily’s father, Daniel, collapsed and had stayed with him and called for help before he died.

Realizing that Annie had been there during her father’s final moments, Lily wanted to give her something meaningful, even though she knew the dress and cardigan could not undo what she had done. Annie acknowledged that she was still hurt and angry, but offered Lily a chance to move forward, returning the cardigan and telling her she would see her at school. Lily’s mother reminded her that being sixteen did not require perfection, but it did require honesty and responsibility. The experience taught her that supporting a child also means creating a relationship where they feel able to tell the truth, even when that truth is difficult.
