For twelve years, $8,000 arrived in the narrator’s account from South Korea, leading everyone to believe that her daughter Mary Lou was doing well and living successfully abroad. After her husband died, Mary Lou remained her whole world, but the daughter’s marriage to an older man and move overseas left her mother with a lingering sense that something was wrong.

Over the years, their calls became shorter and more distant, while messages repeatedly assured her mother that everything was fine. Even video calls offered little comfort, as Mary Lou appeared distracted and unhappy. Her mother used the money to repair the house but still felt that something was missing, continuing to set a place for her daughter during holidays.

After twelve years, the mother finally traveled to Seoul without telling Mary Lou. The large modern home she found was strangely empty, with bare rooms, little food, and boxes filled with cash. When Mary Lou arrived, her mother was shocked by how exhausted she looked. She finally learned that Mary Lou had been abandoned by her husband, left dealing with his debts, and working constantly just to survive.

Despite everything she was going through, Mary Lou had continued sending money because she wanted her mother to believe she was safe and successful. At that point, the money no longer mattered to her mother; she simply wanted her daughter back. The two left together the next day, choosing to rebuild their lives around each other rather than continuing to live behind a carefully maintained illusion.
