There is something captivating about watching birds spiral across the evening sky as daylight fades, and **Chimney Swifts** are especially remarkable. These fast-moving birds spend much of their lives in flight, feeding on insects as they move through the air. On warm summer evenings, their distinctive calls can often be heard above towns and neighborhoods.

Unlike many birds, Chimney Swifts rarely perch on branches. They originally nested in hollow trees, caves, and cliffs, but adapted to using brick chimneys as human development changed their natural surroundings. Today, modern construction and the removal or sealing of older chimneys have reduced the number of suitable nesting and roosting places available to them.

To help address this problem, conservationists have developed tall, narrow **swift towers** that recreate the dark, vertical environment of a chimney. Their interiors are designed so the birds can cling to the walls and build nests from small twigs held together with saliva, providing a secure place to rest and raise their young.

Chimney Swifts are also valuable members of local ecosystems because they consume large numbers of flying insects. Even a single swift tower can provide habitat for breeding pairs and contribute to maintaining local populations. These simple structures show how a small conservation effort can help preserve the remarkable sight and sound of swifts filling the evening sky.
