This reads like a complete inspirational short story centered on identity, burnout, recovery, and rediscovering a vocation. The strongest thread is that Mara doesn’t actually need to become someone new; she needs to stop confusing exhaustion with the loss of the thing she loves.

If you’re looking to polish it, I’d focus on **tightening repetition**, especially in the final third. The repeated ideas—“she was a pilot,” “the instruments tell the truth,” “she had everything she needed,” and “she was ready”—are effective initially, but occur often enough that they begin to dilute the ending rather than intensify it.

The other point I’d consider is technical realism. The story presents Mara as an F-16 combat pilot who assists a 787 captain during a hydraulic-system problem. The broad idea of transferable emergency-management skills is plausible, but some details about civilian certification, military flight-hour credit, and what a non-type-rated passenger pilot could appropriately advise in a commercial cockpit would benefit from aviation-expert review if realism is important.

As a piece of storytelling, though, the emotional architecture is clear: **she thought she had left flying because flying had broken her; she eventually realizes that what needed healing was not the pilot in her, but the person carrying the weight of being one.**
