During the summer of 2026, the peaceful village of Oakhaven became fascinated by Martha, an elderly widow who spent weeks hammering wooden stakes across the roof of her cottage. Neighbors assumed she was making repairs, but as the unusual structure grew, rumors spread and some began mocking her. When questioned, Martha simply said, “The wind has a long memory.”

Despite the gossip, Martha continued working carefully, carving and treating each stake before placing it on the roof. By autumn, the cottage had been transformed, with rows of dark, jagged stakes covering the surface. To the villagers, it looked strange and unnecessary, but Martha appeared to have a clear purpose.

When winter arrived, a powerful storm swept through the valley, damaging homes and tearing apart roofs across the village. Martha’s cottage, however, remained standing. The story explains that the stakes disrupted the airflow across the roof, preventing the wind from moving smoothly over the surface and reducing its force.

What the villagers had dismissed as strange behavior was ultimately presented as careful preparation. Martha’s unusual roof had been designed with the storm in mind, turning her seemingly mysterious project into a lesson about foresight and the value of knowledge that has endured through generations.
