Those metal collars around tree trunks may look unusual, but they serve a practical purpose. Known as tree baffles, they are designed to prevent climbing animals such as squirrels and raccoons from reaching the branches. This can be particularly useful when trees are close to houses, garages, bird feeders, or other structures.

Animals can easily climb rough tree bark using their claws, but the smooth metal surface of a baffle makes it difficult to gain traction. By blocking their path upward, these barriers can help prevent squirrels from building nests or raccoons and other wildlife from using tree branches as routes toward roofs, attics, chimneys, and other areas.

Baffles come in different designs, including wide metal bands for mature trees and cone-shaped versions for smaller trees. They can also be made to blend into the surroundings. Proper installation is important, and the barrier needs to be checked and adjusted as the tree grows so it does not become too tight around the trunk.

So, when you see a shiny metal collar around a tree, it is usually not there to repair or support the trunk. It is a simple wildlife-management tool designed to make climbing more difficult and help keep unwanted animals away from nearby structures.
