Long before modern medical tests and advanced diagnostic technology, people often relied on visible signs to monitor their health. In parts of Europe, the “shelf toilet” was designed with this in mind. Its flat platform allowed people to observe waste before flushing, which could provide clues about changes in digestion and overall health.

At a time when healthcare and medical testing were less accessible, observations such as unusual color, visible blood, or signs of parasites could alert families or physicians to possible health problems. The design therefore reflected the medical knowledge and practical needs of its era.
