For 50 years, Sybil returned every August 15 to the same Ohio café, holding onto a promise she and her high-school sweetheart Daniel had made before leaving for college. Daniel disappeared before their third planned meeting, and she was told that an accident had caused him to lose his memory. Despite building a life of her own, Sybil never completely stopped wondering what had happened to him, until one day, decades later, she walked into the café and found Daniel waiting in their old booth.

Their reunion eventually led to marriage, but on their wedding day Daniel finally revealed that the accident had never happened. He had disappeared after receiving a letter that appeared to be from Sybil, telling him not to come back and to let her go. The letter had actually been forged by Sybil’s longtime best friend, Mary, who had been secretly in love with Daniel. Mary had convinced him that Sybil no longer wanted him, continued communicating with him afterward, and spent decades watching Sybil return to the café without telling her the truth.

When Sybil confronted Mary, she admitted that her actions had begun with jealousy and continued because she wanted Daniel to depend on her. Sybil realized that while she could understand one terrible decision made when they were young, she could not excuse decades of continued deception. Daniel also admitted that he had been afraid to discover Sybil had moved on, so he chose to live without knowing the truth. A year later, Sybil and Daniel returned to the café together, no longer sitting across from each other as they once had, but side by side. After decades of waiting, August 15 finally became a day they could share instead of a day spent wondering.
