When Emily’s mother saw her daughter’s hair scattered across the floor, she was immediately worried. The uneven strands and sadness on Emily’s face made her fear that something serious had happened. She began looking for an explanation, even wondering whether someone at school had hurt her daughter, without realizing that the deeper issue was much closer to home.

There had been signs she had overlooked: a note from school, a mention of an upcoming concert, and Emily’s repeated request for her mother to attend. Her mother always answered, “I’ll try,” as work and responsibility continued to take priority. When another opportunity came to choose between staying late at work and being there for Emily, she once again chose work, assuming there would always be another chance.

Eventually, Emily explained that she had cut her hair to support a friend who was being mocked and feeling alone. Her mother realized that Emily had shown quiet courage by sharing her friend’s burden and simply being there when she was needed.
